Cult, Religion and Pilgrimage monograph

The monograph, Cult, Religion and Pilgrimage, can be downloaded for free at the link below. Speaking as its principal author, I was delighted when it was made freely available by the Council for British Archaeology.

Published ten years ago, the monograph is now out-of-date, and no doubt many of its interpretations will not stand the test of time; but it does contain detailed information about the Thornborough monument complex and its landscape. Writing it was a challenge, for it was all too apparent how little we actually know, with even basic questions- like the chronology of the henges themselves- going unanswered.

There remain so many exciting future opportunities here for research, and, of course, at other nearby sites like the unstudied henges of Nunwick, Hutton Moor, and Cana Barn. But sadly, it was also apparent whilst writing the monograph that this archaeology is a finite resource which has suffered hugely over the last hundred or so years. It’s good future management is essential.
