Thornborough Northern Henge, West Tanfield, North Yorkshire: Report on Geophysical Surveys, July 2024

Back in July, the geophysics team from Historic England conducted a number of surveys immediately beyond the northern entrance into the northern henge. I’m very happy to announce that the report on their important work has now been completed and can be downloaded for free at the link below.

I heartily recommend you have a look. As you would expect, the report is both thorough and highly detailed, including all the necessary technical information. The latter can be bewildering, but you can get a good sense of what was found by reading the conclusion and having a look at Figure 14. The results are exciting, showing a small section of the outer henge ditch, part of an associated arching feature of unknown date and interpretation, a substantial double pit alignment running towards Nosterfield village, and perhaps what may be another possible single pit alignment.
