Introducing Dave Fell

Dave Fell
Dave Fell

Dave Fell has joined the TAG team as an Advisor. He is a hugely experienced archaeologist who has worked largely in the commercial sector, and his publications include the excellent ‘The Evolution of Dere Street. From Routeway to Motorway: Evidence from the A1 Dishforth to Barton Motorway Scheme’.

Dave was fortunate to join the excellent University of York BA Archaeology and MA Fieldwork courses, contributing to fieldwork and interpretation activities supported by FAS Heritage (affiliated to the university at the time). He subsequently worked for FAS in Scotland, also volunteering with the English Heritage Survey and Investigation team in Yorkshire. He started his commercial archaeology career with Northern Archaeological Associates (NAA) in 2006, and aside form brief stints with Wessex Archaeology and PCA, progressed through the various roles at NAA until acquisition by Ecus in late 2021.

Dave’s archaeological career has been focussed on the Late Iron Age and Roman period in North Yorkshire, though he has worked widely in the UK and across the range of archaeological environments. He has produced planning-related reports in abundance, while his primary publications are related to the A1 upgrade between Dishforth and Barton (2009-2021). He was responsible for numerous discoveries and investigations, most notably the 3-year project at Scotch Corner, which benefited from the welcome support of many archaeology luminaries, and was recognised nationally.

Dave is now Operations Director for Ecus Cura Terra, with a central role in running the nation-wide environmental consultancy. While he is no longer an active professional archaeologist, he retains a personal interest in Neolithic NW Europe. With his young family, he is a frequent visitor to sites around his home in Ripon, especially Thornborough, and regularly ventures along the Med-Atlantic fringe from Malta to Orkney.

Ceremonial foci, settlements, camps, and transit between them through the Vale of York/Mowbray have been topics of intrigue for Dave since his MA dissertation, and he is honoured to join this group with such obvious research alignments and incredible expertise. He is eagerly anticipating TAG’s activity programme, and hopes to contribute positively to the shared endeavours of the group, volunteers and local communities.
