New Prehistoric Yorkshire Publication

Collaboration and teamwork are essential to us at TAG, especially when it comes to research and publication.

With that in mind, three of us (Jan Harding, Geoff Harris and Tony Hunt) recently got together to write a short paper which has now been published in Prehistoric Yorkshire 62 (2025), titled ‘The Neolithic and Earlier Bronze Age of the Southern Ure-Swale Catchment’.

In it we argue that whilst the region’s remarkable henges get much of the attention, the area immediately to the south of these sites, extending to Boroughbridge, was far from unimportant. Fieldwork since the 1990s has provided glimpses of how this southernmost part of the catchment was temporarily occupied, including by peoples travelling to reach the henges to the north. Indeed, stone and earthen monuments may have even been built here, complementing the impressive Devil’s Arrow’s, two of which are shown in the photo below.

We very much hope that this is the first of many collaborative publications as TAG drives forward our knowledge and understanding of the region’s Neolithic and Bronze Age. (Jan Harding)
