I’m delighted to announce that on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May 2025 (the early summer bank holiday) TAG will be running a ‘taster’ fieldwork project just to the north of Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. It will provide an opportunity for volunteers to participate in, and experience, archaeological fieldwork.
Those attending will get the chance to excavate test-pits (small areas of excavation placed apart at intervals) in an area known to produce prehistoric worked flint and chert. By doing so the volunteer will experience the excitement of field archaeology and have a go at many of its core jobs such as basic surveying, the proper use of tools, find identification, section drawing, and context recording.
No previous experience of archaeology is necessary, and all are welcome, including children if accompanied by an adult carer. But sorry, no dogs.
The event is free, though we will be encouraging donations to help us meet the project’s running costs.
If you are interested, then please get in-touch using our contact form indicating which of the days you would like to attend, you can come to both if you like!
Please note that we are limited to a maximum of 18 volunteers per day because of parking. This event will be TAG’s first attempt to run fieldwork, and it will be followed by other more ambitious fieldwork opportunities, including one, we hope, later this year. With luck we will have some exciting news for you very shortly. Thank you. (Jan Harding)
