We would like to warmly thank all of you who joined us on Sunday 30 March to fieldwalk at Hutton Moor.
Whilst the day started very windy, everyone battled through until conditions improved. We ended up collecting from a large area and are certainly very pleased with the results.
A total of 27 worked flints were found, all largely clustered together across one part of the field. This collection includes a possible microlith, 8 blades, of which 3 are retouched, 3 core fragments, 3 flakes, and 12 pieces of debitage/waste. They appear to be largely later Mesolithic-earlier Neolithic in character. Eight pieces of what are possibly worked chert were also found, along with a fragment of metalworking waste, a piece of jet, and what may be three worked stone fragments. Excitingly, the latter includes what could be half of a small ground axe or ard point, but needs the attention of a specialist to be sure of its interpretation.
The whole team worked very hard and were excellent company, so thank you. We hope all those participating found it a worthwhile experience- and that it has left them wanting to do more!
