Events

The Thornborough Archaeology Group is dedicated to fieldwork, desk-based research, and educational tours and talks that bring together enthusiasts, researchers, and the general public alike.

These events offer friendly, inclusive, and engaging opportunities to find out more about the region’s prehistory and to contribute directly to what we know about it.

Past Events

Return to Windmill House

Aug 23-24, 2025, 10:00 – 17:00

TAG is returning to Windmill House for our ‘Taster Event, Part Two’. As many of you know, we were there in early May excavating a total of 12 test-pits. They produced a small collection of Neolithic/earlier Bronze Age lithics and also a possible feature which we were unable to excavate. Well, we are going back, extending two of the test-pits, and fully excavating the possible feature. We are looking for a smaller team of 15 volunteers, all of whom will get the opportunity to learn and develop a range of skills and techniques. It is not essential to have archaeological experience, but we will give priority to those who attended the original event back in May. If you are interested in participating, then please let us know by using our contact form specifying which of the days you are able to attend.

Thornborough Festival of Archaeology

Jul 19, 2025, 10:00 – 17:00

West Tanfield Memorial Hall and then Thornborough Henge

TAG’s next event will be on Saturday 19th July. We are offering a ‘Talk and tour’ for those who want to find out more about Thornborough’s remarkable Neolithic and Bronze Age landscape.

Taster Fieldwork project

May 4-5, 2025

TAG will be running a ‘taster’ fieldwork project just to the north of Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire on 4th and 5th May providing an opportunity for volunteers to participate in, and experience, archaeological fieldwork.

Attendees will excavate test-pits (small areas of excavation placed apart at intervals) in an area known to produce prehistoric worked flint and chert. The day will offer the opportunity to try basic surveying, the proper use of tools, find identification, section drawing, and context recording. No previous experience of archaeology is necessary, and all are welcome, including children if accompanied by an adult carer. But sorry, no dogs. The event is free, though we will be encouraging donations to help us meet the project’s running costs. If you are interested, then please get in-touch using the contact form indicating which of the days you would like to attend- you can come to both if you like! Please note that we are limited to a maximum of 18 volunteers per day because of parking.

TAG Action Day

Mar 30, 2025

Hutton Conyers

TAG is delighted to announce that we will be running the first of our action days on Sunday 30th March 2025, when we are assembling a team to conduct fieldwalking (walking a ploughed field at intervals, collecting any surface finds). Secrecy is required to protect the site, so we can’t tell you exactly where until nearer the time. But its a fantastic location in the parish of Hutton Conyers, to the north-east of Ripon.

If you would like to join the team for the day then please get in-touch using our website contact form, stating specifically that your interest is in the fieldwalking so we don’t get it confused with our taster event in May. No previous experience is necessary. Because of parking restrictions, we are limited to 24 volunteers.
