TAG had an eventful Easter! As you know, our intended focus for fieldwork was Sinderby, with a geophysics survey of the henge, and fieldwalking immediately to the east of the monument.
It started well on Good Friday, with some of the volunteers helping Dr. Ben Edwards and Prof. Seren Griffiths, of Manchester Metropolitan University, with magnetometry at the henge; and other volunteers making a solid start with the fieldwalking. But then fate intervened. To cut a long story short, we had to stop fieldwalking because of a health and safety concern, and then a couple of hours later, end the magnetometry because of high winds. Not what we wanted, but that’s fieldwork for you.
Even worse, the weather forecast for Saturday was lousy, so we had to take the very difficult decision of not returning to Sinderby henge. Instead, we switched attention to Windmill House, completing ground penetrating radar across the field within which we are currently excavating.
Obviously, its disappointing that we didn’t achieve what we were aiming to do at Sinderby, but we hope to be back in September to finish the job. And we did, nonetheless, get some good geophysics results, which we will share with you in a later post.
We are extremely grateful to Ben, Seren, and all the volunteers, for their hardwork, patience, and jolly disposition over what was a challenging few days. Thank you. (Jan Harding)
